PETITION #NoKeeneGasPlant: http://bit.ly/2rHGwnq

June 15, 2017

🔸 No Keene Gas Plant: Call & Email Mayor Lane today!

MAYOR LANE may not know the consequences of a fracked gas plant in Keene. In fact, he seems to think he can say no to a pipeline after he creates the need and means for one. Did you know that Kinder Morgan was looking at Vernon VT or Hinsdale NH to build an industrial gas plant? Hey, Keene just happens to be on that pipeline route and now, a willing victim.

ECHO Action testified in Washington, DC at the National Press Club in December along with other pipeline organizations against the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's #FERCabuses. We're helping others to fight what Keene is welcoming in!

The temporary gas plant will provide fuel for the Monadnock Marketplace. Once approved, Liberty Utilities will seek approval for a permanent gas plant and Mayor Lane wants to get the City of Keene on gas. Liberty Utilities offers cities a 10% reduction in fuel rates and raises rates on their other customers. The gas industry currently has a glut (excess of gas) and are selling way below normal rates. Businesses will pay to convert, the rate will go up and as we rapidly move to renewable energy, they will be forced to pay to convert again. Businesses should be saving money and serving the community by converting to heat pumps and renewable energy now.

Launch Party for Community Supported Solar

Saturday, July 23rd from Noon – 3pm

Join us for an opening ceremony, free samples, giveaways, live music from the Solar Sisters, kids activities and more!

Want to know more about hosting a Community Supported Solar project at your organization? CLICK HERE TO RSVP for an info session at 1pm, led by John Kondos of the Monadnock Sustainabilty Network.

Are you a Town or State Representative and want to know more about how changing policy can make projects like this more widely achievable in our state? Contact John Kondos for an info session surrounding the celebration.

Monadnock Food Co-op is the host of the first locally owned Community Supported Solar project in New Hampshire. Community Supported Solar is locally developed, funded, owned and controlled, whereas most community solar projects are owned and controlled by developers or utilities.

The 43.5 kW photovoltaic project, was installed by the Keene-based design and installation firm Solar Source, and covers our entire available roof area with solar panels that convert sunlight into electricity. Based on the actual production of the Brattleboro Food Co-op’s PV system, the predicted annual power output of this system is 48,000 kWh per year.

Monadnock Sustainability Network (MSN) managed the two year initiative in collaboration withAntioch University New England (AUNE), a dedicated steering committee of local citizens, and the Co-op’s General Manager, Finance Officer and Sustainability Coordinator. The project will at first be owned by Cypress Community Solar, LLC, a company created specifically to allow a group of local investors to fund it, then sell clean, locally harvested electricity to our Co-op. We, in turn, intend to buy the project outright within the next ten years.

Monadnock Food Co-op pioneered this community supported solar project with Monadnock Sustainabilty Network so others can follow — MSN has developed a model that can be used by others to pursue a locally owned, clean, renewable energy system on their school, CSA, church or other site in their community. If you are interested in hosting a project at your organization, contact John Kondos at MSN or join the network and download their how to guide—NH Community Supported Solar Guide—on your own atwww.greenmonadnock.org.

On Spectacle Pond" : Resisting the Pipeline!

Saturday, July 16th, beginning at noon (2 events)

Join us for a celebration of solidarity with Berkshire friends & neighbors fighting the Connecticut Expansion pipeline proposed to run through protected land in the Otis State Forest. This event/action will take place in two locations, and you can link with us, in one location or both. Both events and all activities are free and family-friendly!

12:00pm–1:00pm: Kickoff Rally at Great Barrington Gazebo behind Town Hall on Main Street with music by Bonner McAllester and David Grover, Barbara and Gaham Dean; Pachamama Puppets Children's Theatre will perform their short play, THE WORLD WE LOVE; local speakers active in pipeline resistance will present the latest updates and information on the legislative front. (On and off street parking available, but come early because it will be a very beautiful and busy day in Great Barrington) The program will conclude with a live linkup with our friends and allies in eastern Massachusetts, who will be walking in the 4 day “People Over Pipelines March” in eastern Massachusetts from July 14-18.

At the conclusion of the program we will organize a carpool down to Lower Spectacle Pond in the Otis State Forest in Sandisfied (twenty minutes away on Cold Spring Rd, off Rt. 23)

2:00pm–4:00pm: A Celebration of Solidarity rally at Lower Spectacle Pond in the Otis State Forest, with musical guests Ben Grosscup, Kate O'Conner, Bonner McAllester and others. Featured speakers will be Rose Wessel from No Fracked Gas in Mass, Susan Theberge with The Sugar Shack Alliance, and Will Elwell, who defiantly built a 10-by-15-foot post-and-beam cabin inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s 1845 “Civil Disobedience” essay and his cabin at Walden Pond to stand defiantly in the path of Kinder Morgan’s Northeast Energy Direct natural gas pipeline.

Lower Spectacle Pond has an ideal beach and boat launch, so we are encourage kayaks and canoers to 'drop off, put in and paddle up' on the pond beginning at noon! Bring an extra kayak or canoe for others!(Parking along one side of Cold Spring Road. Please follow our parking directions when you get to the site to keep things moving and the roads clear)

BACK STORY: Kinder Morgan has proposed the Connecticut Expansion pipeline through NY, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Kinder Morgan intends to take private property and public land by eminent domain. Otis State Forest is public land, constitutionally protected under Massachusetts Article 97. Sandisfield, the community directly impacted has overwhelmingly voted in opposition to this fracked gas pipeline.

he first Hands Across Our Land actions were held on August 18, 2015, and thirty-five communities in 10 states participated. We plan to double, perhaps even triple, that participation in 2016. Hands Across Our Land began in Nelson County, Virginia in 2015 with a grassroots group called, Free Nelson. Co-administrators, Episcopal Priest Marion Kanour, along with Nelson residents Marilyn Shifflett and Sharon Ponton had been fighting in their community to stop the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline for over a year.  Sharon came up with the idea after talking to another local activist, Matt Dwyer, while they were lobbying the General Assembly in Richmond, VA. Sharon solicited the help of other grassroots groups, as well as regional and national coalitions to participate and sponsor the action. The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL) became an integral partner with Free Nelson. BREDL is now managing the annual Hands Across Our Land campaign. You can find out more about BREDL and the work we're doing by clicking on the BREDL tab at the top of the page.

"On their way from the RNC to the DNC, the Nuns on the Bus will stop in Concord for a rally focused on closing the gaps that put decent lives and a functioning political system out of reach for too many people.

"Federal policies enacted since 1980 have exacerbated vast economic and social divides in our country. These divides are eroding the very fabric of our society," say the Nuns on the Bus, a project of NETWORK. The good news is that groups in New Hampshire and all over the country are organizing for change.

NH SIERRA CLUB REGIONAL POLITICAL TRAINING

June 11, 2016

Saturday, Jun 11th

9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Sierra Club Political Committee - a great opportunity!

National Education Association, 9 South Spring St, Concord, NH 03301

Join us in Concord, NH for a one-day political organizing training that will focus on how to take your chapter’s political program to the next level. We will work on building capacity for your program that results in grassroots power. Our emphasis will be on the skills needed to raise money for your chapter PAC, one-on-one contact with our members, and direct engagement with campaigns. This training is for all -- from the political junkie to the occasional activist -- and you will learn the skills that not only win elections, but also our many other environmental campaigns.

The goal at the end of the training is to have the broad strokes of a product that your chapter/group can use to win electoral campaigns, which will aid our efforts to achieve our conservation goals. In the era of super PACs and huge spending on advertisements, grassroots campaigns are going to be the difference between winning and losing. That's why the Sierra Club needs your help to deliver that grassroots power -- RSVP today!

Workshops

Renewable Energy in New England

With Richard Heinberg, Post Carbon Institute and Lynn Benander, Co-op Power

Join this workshop to discuss the New England energy scene in more detail, including possibilities for community owned, renewable energy. Richard Heinberg, our keynote speaker, will give more details on the opportunities and challenges in the transition to renewables. Lynn Benander is the CEO and President of Co-Op Power, a consumer-owned sustainable energy cooperative that operates within a regional network of Community Energy Cooperatives. Lynn has worked for many years to support the development of consumer, producer, worker-owned and other locally-owned businesses that meet basic needs for energy, food, and shelter. She will speak about the network of consumer-owned energy co-ops around New England, as well as possibilities for our region’s renewable future.

Food Justice and Security in New England

With Karen Spiller, Food Solutions New England

How can we achieve food justice and food security for all of New England, especially given climate change and environmental degradation? Food Solutions New England has a vision for a sustainable New England food system that produces 50% of our food within the region by 2060. Join this workshop to learn about their vision and the essential role grassroots groups and community-based agriculture play in achieving it. This is a great chance to consider how our efforts can combine for a greater, region-wide impact.

Resilience & Resistance in New England: Building a Holistic Movement for Justice & Sustainability

With Chuck Collins, moderator, Institute for Policy Studies and JP New Economy Transition; Tim Stevenson, Founding Director at Post Oil Solutions and author of Resilience and Resistance: Building Sustainable Communities for a Post Oil Age; and Marla Marcum, Climate Disobedience Center

“Resilience” and “resistance” are essential complements in a holistic struggle to build an equitable and sustainable society. This workshop will discuss how all our work can benefit when we situate ourselves in this larger framework. The workshop will also include a discussion of the status of the movement to resist pipelines here in New England.

Building Resilience Together: Get Support for your Current Work, and Think Together about Collaborative Possibilities

With Ben Roberts, Conversation Collaborative and Sarah Byrnes, New England Resilience & Transition Network

Join with other community initiatives to receive support for your community work and think together about how we can be “more than the sum of our parts.” You’ll present a challenge you are experiencing, and receive input and support from your peers. You will also be able to offer input and support to others. We’ll also move into a conversation about what we can do together to enhance resilience, sustainability, and equity. Where are the potential collaborations among us?

The New Economy Movement

With Anand Jahi, Program Director at the New Economy Coalition and Gwendolyn Hallsmith, Vermonters for a New Economy

What is the new economy? Join this workshop to find out! You’ll hear about a vibrant and growing movement from two leading practitioners in the field. Anand Jahi, Program Director at the New Economy Coalition, will offer framing remarks on the state of this international movement that is building a sustainable and equitable economy at many scales, from local to global. Gwendolyn Hallsmith, Director of Vermonters for a New Economy, will give a picture of how the new economy is taking shape in the great state of Vermont — from local currencies, public banking, and genuine progress indicators to a new field of study that brings it together called Permanomics. Together, we’ll consider how to build the new economy in our communities and the New England region as a whole.

The Power of Story for Building Resilience

With Marianne Connor, screenwriter and producer

In times of big change, the stories we tell about where we are headed and why it is worth the journey are critical to building community resilience, creativity and commitment. These stories can compel collective, conscious action or paralyze us in fear and powerlessness. Come learn the key elements for developing your community or organization’s transformation story.

Marianne Connor is a screenwriter/producer and evolutionary activist who uses the power of story to support communities to step into big change by conscious design in partnership with nature.

Skills for Building Equity: Race and Class in Transition and Resilience Organizing

With Charis Boke, cultural anthropologist, community organizer, and Program Leader with the Unitarian Universalist College of Social Justice

Equity is intrinsic to resilience, and no one is truly resilient until we all are. Resilience and care are deeply connected, and we can’t heal our planet’s challenges without caring attention to people as well as ecologies. It is essential that we address and heal from historical and ongoing injustices in order to build a world where we can all thrive, regardless of race, class, gender, sexual orientation or anything else. In this workshop, we will explore how we can learn to care for one another as a key part of building resilience. We will consider how our identities impact our community work, and learn approaches for working across difference in order to build multi-racial and cross-class initiatives and work toward an equitable region.

Culture Shift: A Social Permaculture Framework for Creating & Cultivating Powerful, Joyful, & Effective Groups

With Samantha Wechsler, Wildwise

Innovative and promising initiatives often fall far short of their transformative potential—or are stopped dead in their tracks—not because of a shortcoming inherent to the initiatives or the ideas behind them, but because of conflict within and between groups of people. Even when everyone agrees to a shared vision and believes that they are coming to the table bolstered by the highest of ideals, collaborative efforts often come apart at the seams, leaving people feeling discouraged and betrayed.

In this workshop, we will explore key principles of “social permaculture”, learn skills and tools for creating and contributing to functional and effective groups, and develop a deeper understanding of the role of meaningful cooperation in bringing about a just and equitable transition. Participants, regardless of their level of previous group experience, will come away feeling energized, inspired, and better equipped to (re)commit to collaborative efforts.

Samantha Wechsler is the owner of Wildwise, a coaching and consulting business that is dedicated to individual and collective transformation. Samantha provides life and leadership coaching for women executives, entrepreneurs, and changemakers who yearn to make a deeper impact in their personal lives, their work, their communities, or beyond. She also works with organizational teams to increase their effectiveness while building a healthier, more life-affirming culture.

Restoring Ecosystems and Biodiversity: Nature’s Plan for Resilience and Transition

With Adam Sacks, Sharon McGregor, Jim Laurie, and Paula Phipps

Healthy, biodiverse ecosystems provide clean water, abundant healthy food, solid community economics, climate resilience and massive capture of atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis and long-lived complex biomolecules. There are many viable and sustainable approaches for a range of ecosystems; they are inexpensive, low-tech, powerful and just about anyone can participate. In this interactive workshop we’ll discuss a variety of practices from around the world, and focus on the possibilities in urban, suburban and rural environments in New England.

FREE MAPLE BREAKFAST AT KSC WITH CLIMATE CHANGE PANEL

Register at Eventbrite

"Presby has witnessed changes in the weather that have simultaneously pushed up the start of the annual maple sugaring season while also pushing back its conclusion. He is bullish on the prospects of New Hampshire producing even more maple syrup; the entrance of new, younger maple sugar producers and the possibility that maple sugaring will be not only a continuation of a long-held Granite State tradition, but also a major cash crop.

What concerns Presby, however, is whether the positives he foresees can come to fruition given the weather changes and the fact, that, in his opinion, many people don’t fully appreciate how big and important maple sugaring is to the New Hampshire economy. Those and other issues will be addressed by Presby and a panel of experts on March 9 during the Climate Impacts Maple Breakfast at Keene State College.

Sponsored by Moms Clean Air Force, Union of Concerned Scientists, League of Conservation Voters, National Wildlife Federation, Environment New Hampshire, New Hampshire Sierra Club and the Keene State College Ecology Club, the event will be held on the eve of New Hampshire’s Maple Syrup Weekend.

In addition to enjoying pancakes with real maple syrup, attendees will hear presentations from Phil Suter of the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce; Steven Roberge, Cheshire County Extension field specialist; and three maple producers: Presby; Glenn Yardley, of Stonewall Farm in Keene; and Peter Rhoades, of Alstead.

"The Ways & Means Committee has scheduled continuation of the HB 1101 Hearing for 1 PM, Tuesday, February 16th in Room 202. This will be the third and last session as the committee has a Work Session tentatively scheduled for 2 PM.

In my opinion, this is the most important pipeline bill on the calendar. If you can only make one Hearing, make it this one."

NH REBELLION'S "WE THE PEOPLE PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY TENT CONVENTION": Pipeline Opponents Rise Up!

February 06, 2016

WE THE PEOPLE – A Presidential Primary Tent Convention

Friday, February 5 – Sunday, February 7, 2016

Veterans Park in Manchester, NH

* Pipeline Opposition table on the 5th & 6th. ECHO Action & NH Spirit tabling in the tent on the 6th.

On Primary Weekend February 5-7, 2016, patriots from across New Hampshire and the United States will gather at “political ground zero” in Manchester, NH in the first-ever We the People Convention to fight big money in politics. The Revolutionary-themed Convention will feature multiple presidential candidates, national reform leaders and entertainers, educational and artistic programming in a 500-capacity heated tent across the street from the Center of NH Convention Center, where national media are based during the primary. The Convention will include public demonstrations and targeted marches to presidential candidates to secure “first 100 days” commitments and generate a final burst of national media attention for the Fight Big Money agenda at the start of the 2016 election.

COST

The Convention is free and open to the public – all are welcome to attend! Housing will be on your dime. Donations are gladly accepted.

RESERVATIONS

If you plan on coming, it's critical that you reserve specific ticket block(s) through Eventbrite. Although the event is free of charge, we need your help in managing our costs. Many of you have pre-registered by RSVPing on this page, but we need to you register through Eventbrite as so we know who will be in the tent at different points throughout the weekend and can keep track for food.

PARKING

A detailed map of all Manchester parking is here. We recommend the Victory Garage or the City Hall Lot - they are free on the weekends. On-street parking close to the park is $0.75/hour until the early evening Friday. Free parking, not identified on the map, is available a few blocks West and folks will need to identify parking for themselves (ie, near Bronstein Park) when they arrive.

SATURDAY

9:00 AM - Dave Moloney of NH PLAN is speaking on a panel about Big Money and the Environment

★ 1:45 PM - Governor Hassan has been invited to speak as a Senate candidate. We encourage pipeline opposition to attend!
