Why people across America are so strongly opposed to pipelines
EPPING NH— “No Pipeline” didn’t say enough, NED pipeline opponents wanted to be fossil free in the 603. On Monday, March 12th at 7 PM, at the Epping Board of Selectmen’s meeting, ECHO Action members will discuss why communities across America are fighting to protect themselves from the health and safety concerns, pollution, noise and climate change threats associated with pipelines.
In 2017, Liberty Utilities announced plans for the Granite Bridge pipeline from Manchester to Auburn, Candia, Raymond, Epping, Brentwood, Exeter and Stratham NH. ECHO Action, having followed Liberty Utilities’ gas pipeline expansion throughout New Hampshire, kicked off their campaign with a lighted sign vigil outside the SNHU arena on a frigid night in Manchester.
The group held vigils in downtown Keene last summer and fall and lighted sign vigils Friday nights from November through January. One of their signs displays their mantra and mission, “Fossil Free 603”.
ECHO Action founding member, NED pipeline opponent and organizer, Sue Durling, created an interactive pipeline map to show those along the route the proximity of the pipeline to schools, churches and community centers. A retired nurse, she was also a member of the NH Pipeline Health Study team.
Stephanie Scherr, ECHO Action’s founder and an environmental educator, was a vocal opponent of the Kinder Morgan Northeast Energy Direct (NED) pipeline that was slated to be built in Southern NH, but was withdrawn in May of 2016 due to a lack of contracts. ECHO Action opposed the closure of the Concord Steam biofuel plant and the transition of the State House and City of Concord to fracked gas.
The organization is now engaged in active opposition to Liberty Utilities gas expansion in Keene as well as the their Granite Bridge Pipeline and promoting the abundant renewable energy and jobs offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine could provide. They are also aligned with pipeline opponents in Hanover and Lebanon who oppose another proposed Liberty Utilities pipeline.
Monday night’s presentation in Epping will be a brief introduction to pipelines, the project, and what the community can expect. The group is offering presentations in each of the towns along the pipeline route and are planning community education and organizing forums. Town officials and community members can view the interactive map and schedule presentations through the organization’s website at FossilFree603.org.
